Helping All Members Of The Family

We are a general medical practice that’s open to people of all ages. One of the reasons families are eager to obtain their healthcare at One Stop Medical is that Dr Rachel runs a specialist teen service, which aims to meet the specific needs of young people. Dr Rachel recognises that some young people may feel as if their needs are unmet through adult services, and yet are too old to find paediatric services of value. Our youth clinic on Thursday afternoons aims to address this problem, providing STI checks, contraception, assistance with mental health issues and other services that are particularly relevant to the younger generation.

Preventative Medicine

In addition to treating injuries, infections, diseases and other health problems, we also provide a good selection of preventative health services. In addition to childhood vaccinations, we also offer holiday travel vaccines & flu vaccines. The health professionals at One Stop Medical are also able to provide nutritional & exercise advice to help you achieve your ideal weight and advice on how to quit smoking or reduce alcohol intake. Coal Mine Workers Health Scheme (CMWHS)

Mackay is located in a coal mining area, so it's logical that we have the right expertise to help local miners get the health checks and care they need. We have considerable experience in administering coal board medicals, in addition to pre-employment medicals & drug and alcohol testing. We also offer advice and assistance for miners, doing our utmost to ensure their health remains good, despite the hazards of their employment.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are doctors' visits covered by Medicare?

If you are enrolled with Medicare, then you will receive a Medicare rebate after paying the private fee to see your choice of GP.  One Stop Medical doctors do bulk bill children under the age of 12.

  • Can doctors give medical certificates?

Yes. If you require a sick note to take time off work or you want a diagnostic certificate that will allow you to access more specialist help, just schedule an appointment to talk with your doctor about this. It's worth noting that a medical certificate is not valid for statutory holidays but it can be used for leave from work during the average week. Most medical certificates are valid for three months after the date they were issued, unless stated otherwise.

It's also possible for your doctor to write a medical certificate for other purposes, such as obtaining benefits from insurance companies and government agencies, like disability payments.

  • Do you provide telephone and Telehealth appointments?

Yes, we do, and it's a great way to get medical advice without having to leave your home. To access these services, you'll just need a laptop or mobile device as well as video conferencing software like Skype or Teams. Thanks to modern advancements, Telehealth or telephone calls help you connect with your doctor when you are unable to visit the practice. A Medicare rebate for this service is only available for patients who have seen their doctor for a face-to-face consultation in the last 12 months. The GP will sometimes offer a telephone consult to discuss non-serious results. However, for more significant results and follow up, the GP is likely to want you to come into the practice to discuss the results in person.

You can book a telehealth appointment by calling us or via our online booking form. You'll need an e-mail address, mobile phone number and credit card for payment; all regular information that you would need for an in-office visit. If this sounds like something you'd like to try, we are happy to hear from you.

  • Can GPs perform surgery?

GP's are able to perform small procedures, such as suturing lacerations, removing skin lesions, draining small abcesses and partially removing toenails. If you have a problem which is more severe than this, then we recommend you speak to your GP about being referred to a local surgical specialist.

  • Do you provide medical assistance in an emergency?

Yes, all the GP's are equipped to deal with medical emergencies, including resuscitation, breathing difficulties, seizures and more. While you should ring 000 during a medical emergency, the clinical staff can handle emergencies that occur at our practice.

  • How do I order a repeat prescription or continuing referral?

If you are already registered as a patient of the practice, some regular medications and continuing referrals may be obtained online via the "HOTDOC" app or by phoning the practice. We prefer that your last face-to-face consultation in the practice has been within the last 6 months and that you give at least 48 hours' notice. A $25 fee is charged for this service.

  • How do I find out my test results?

If your GP would like to discuss your results with you, they will send you a text message to either book a "telephone consult" or a "face-to-face consult". If you do not receive any SMS messages, and would like to know your results, please phone the practice, and check what action needs to be taken. If you would like a further explanation of your results, please book an appointment to see your GP - online via HOTDOC or by phoning the practice.
