Especially in more mature people, the flu can range from a deeply unpleasant experience to a genuinely life-threatening situation, so it's always a good idea to make sure you're protected over this flu season.

Mackay Flu Vaccination
Each year, the team at One Stop Medical administers hundreds of flu vaccinations to people across the local community, helping to strengthen herd immunity and protect those most vulnerable to severe illness.
Before vaccination, any necessary health checks can be performed to ensure suitability. The vaccination is administered efficiently, with time during the appointment to address any questions or concerns about the process or the vaccine itself.
A flu vaccination typically takes only 10 to 15 minutes, making it easy to schedule even on a busy day. This small investment of time can prevent weeks of illness and reduce the risk of missed work or other disruptions caused by influenza.
Benefits Of Getting The Flu Vax
Taking the time to get immunised against influenza can protect you from the flu by both reducing your chance of catching influenza and also reducing your chance of suffering from severe illness. Even if you're not vulnerable, falling sick with flu at the same time as another respiratory illness like Covid-19 can pose a serious risk to your health.
As well as protecting yourself, getting vaccinated protects people around you. Even if you're in good health, a flu vaccine for yourself can stop you from spreading influenza to older family members and vulnerable people for whom the flu could be dangerous.
If you do get sick after having a flu vaccine, you're more likely to suffer a milder illness and recover more quickly, ensuring you're back on your feet in no time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why Do I Need The Flu Vaccine?
- Flu is a common name for a whole family of influenza viruses that cause similar symptoms in patients but can vary in terms of their severity and infection rates.
- Every year, millions of people are infected, but because influenza viruses mutate very quickly, each year's variants are too different to be prevented by the same vaccines. This means we have to develop new ones every year, and re-vaccinate vulnerable people each year too.
What Are Flu Symptoms?
- Most influenzas have a common set of symptoms that include a temperature of 38°C or above, as well as aches and pains among others.
- Common flu symptoms include; fever* or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue (tiredness), vomiting & diarrhea (more common in children) (Source: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/symptoms/symptoms.htm)
- These can be nasty and painful in young people, but potentially lethal in older people and babies, which can make getting vaccinated imperative in these groups. If you are worried, you are welcome to book an appointment however we ask that you please contact us via phone prior to visiting our clinic.
How Do Flu Vaccines Work?
- The main principle behind the flu vaccine is that it teaches your body's own immune system to fight the latest variants of the influenza viruses by introducing dead or neutralised versions of the virus and giving your body a chance to study them.
- While this can lead to your body experiencing a mild version of the symptoms, it means that it will be prepared to fight the real flu virus if you catch it, and will have the right antibodies already prepared.
- PLEASE NOTE: It can take up to 14 days to become immune, but during that time you're still protected.
When Should I Get The Flu Vaccine?
- It's always best to get vaccinated as soon as possible before transmission of the latest variants become endemic in the community. This is because fewer people will carry the virus and there is less chance of getting sick too.
- Studies show that the chance of getting hospitalised by flu falls by 82% in older adults who are vaccinated, while high rates of adult vaccination can even lessen the rate of flu in children by 74%, so there's definitely a benefit in getting vaccinated as soon as you can.
Who Is Eligible For A Free Flu Vaccine?
As of 21 July 2022, Those eligible for a free flu vaccine include;
- Patients age 65 and over,
- Patients identifying as Aboriginal or Torre Strait Islander over the age of 6 months,
- Children between the age of 6 months & 5 years,

Can the flu vaccine make me sick?
No, the flu vaccine is 'inactivated' which means it doesn't contain the live flu virus. You cannot catch the flu from a flu vaccine in Australia. If you do have any further concerns, please speak to a doctor.
Who should get a flu shot?
The Australian Government recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months old has a flu vaccine every year. It's especially important for vulnerable people, and people who are in contact with vulnerable people, to get their flu vaccine on time. This includes older people, children, and people with chronic illnesses.
Is The Flu Vaccine Safe For People With Egg Allergies?
The flu vaccine is usually grown in eggs, but the minimal traces of egg protein present within the vaccine are so small that they rarely trigger an allergic reaction. The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) considers the vaccine safe for both children and adults with egg allergies.
If you have an egg allergy, let us know before you receive the vaccine and you can stay with us for 30 minutes after your shot to ensure your safety.
